Members honoured

NOW that the outdoor bowling season has finished, many members of Keynsham Bowling Club are playing indoors, on rinks at Bristol, Chippenham and Paulton.

On the social side, we have our regular coffee mornings in the Clubhouse on the first Wednesday of the month, and our annual presentation lunch took place at Saltford Golf Club, attended by over 70 members.

The president and vice president, John Nix and Margaret Church, presented over 25 trophies to the winners of competitions that took place throughout the season.

Later in the month we held our annual general meeting in the clubhouse, at which members stood in silence in memory of those who had passed away in the previous 12 months.

For the 2026 season, our president and vice president were re-elected, along with Steve Coles as chair, David Hockney as secretary and Don Weston as treasurer.

Tony Hunter stood down after many years as the men’s fixture secretary, to be replaced by Andy Abrahams.

Lynne Pearce was re-elected as ladies’ captain, while Bob Edge became the men’s captain in a non-playing capacity due to health reasons.

Geoff Yorath was re-elected captain of the men’s A team, with Beresford Parker becoming the B team captain, Dave Jay the Thursday C team captain and Mike Barrow the triples captain.

Chair Steve Coles presented life membership awards to long-serving members Bob Edge and Ian Tweedie.

Bob, a member for about 40 years, has served as club captain a number of times, as well as representing the club at county level. He is a great encourager of new bowlers, particularly by bringing them into the Somerset Mixed County League on a Friday, which he captains.

Ian’s roles over the years have included men’s captain, club secretary and club chairman. As a qualified coach who organises the weekly coaching sessions, Ian is also important to new members.

For a number of years, he organised the men’s tour at the end of the season, plus trips to Cyprus at the start of the year. He has bought smiles to people’s faces at social events with his impersonation of the Cornish comedian Jethro.
