Celebrating canaltrust volunteers

THE Kennet & Avon Canal Trust’s boat Hannah passed through Hanham Lock last month as part of the trust’s 75th anniversary celebrations.

The wheelchair-accessible, wide-beam canal boat has been travelling all the way from Bristol to Reading.

Founded in 1951, the organisation has worked over many years to save and repair the derelict canal, which was fully re-opened for boats to travel between Bristol and Reading in 1990.

The canal is now maintained by the Canal and River Trust and volunteers from the two charities met up at Hanham Lock, which is on the River Avon between Hanham and Keynsham.

The Kennet & Avon Canal Trust continues to promote, protect and enhance the canal in a variety of ways. Almost entirely run by volunteers, it operates a fleet of four holiday-hire boats for people with disabilities, a narrow boat for youth groups, six boats for day trips and the world’s oldest steam engine that is still in perfect working order. There is also a museum and visitor centre in Devizes.
