POLICE say they are carrying out extra drink and drug-driving patrols during and after England World Cup matches.
The force says several types of offences, “often linked to alcohol”, increase when England play. Officers are urging people planning to go out to watch a match to “make a plan and stick to it”, including having a designated driver, using public transport or a taxi, and reminding drivers that they could still be over the limit the morning after if they have been drinking during a late match.
Increased patrols will be around city and town centres and pubs on match nights.
And the force says it is expecting an increase in domestic violence, as abusers are known to become more aggressive during tournaments, regardless of the match results.
Avon & Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Clare Moody said: “No result, no referee decision, no amount of alcohol creates domestic abuse. It is a choice, and it is a crime.”
