Residents in battle toreverse ‘grey belt’ ruling

A last-ditch attempt is under way to stop a large commercial development  at a former nursery site near Bitton.

Upton Cheney Land’s outline plans for the site at Brewery Hill were refused by South Gloucestershire Council, largely on transport grounds, but earlier this year a planning inspector granted permission for the scheme on appeal.

He ruled that the site could be considered ‘grey belt’ land for development rather than green belt.

The inspector did acknowledge that there would be some impact on Bitton Conservation Area and Upton Cheney Conservation Area, but said this was outweighed by the  benefit of providing employment .

Bitton Residents’ Association has written to South Gloucestershire Council urging it to explain why transport objections were not pursued at the appeal hearing and asking it to consider pursuing or supporting a High Court challenge to the appeal judgement.

A spokesperson for the council, said: “We are currently reviewing the letter from Bitton Village Residents Association and will seek legal guidance on the matters raised. The Council will formally respond to the letter once this is done.”
