Call for action on path safety

SOUTH Gloucestershire Council is being urged to make urgent repairs to a section of the Bristol & Bath Railway Path where a cyclist crashed and suffered a brain haemorrhage.

Emanuele Ziglioli, aged 50, spent ten days in a coma after the incident in August next to Siston Common.

The steep stretch of path, between a bridge over the Avon Ring Road from Siston Hill and Warmley, is uneven because of tree roots pushing up underneath the surface.

Katie Moss, of Bristol Cycling Campaign, told the BBC: “People have been reporting issues here for quite a long time. It shouldn’t take accidents to have to fix key arteries like this.”

A council spokesperson said: “We are aware of an accident on the path in which a cyclist was injured, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery. We inspected the area and installed warning signs. As with any highways issues, repairs are assessed and prioritised, and work at this location will be carried out as soon as possible.”

The council is encouraging anyone who spots a defect anywhere on the highway network to report it at tinyurl.com/yfx4ywwn.
